We had a great time at the Downtown Sioux Falls Harvest and Wine Festival and wanted to say “thank you” to everyone that stopped by!  There were a lot of great questions and interest in straw bale construction.  A couple highlights:

  • A display of design and technical information about straw bale construction including a brief history, tips on choosing bales, infill and structural techniques, moisture protection, insulation and R-values, max compressive strengths, and fire testing data.
  • A straw bale mock up demonstrating how to build a proper foundation and sill plates to protect bales from moisture and one example of pre compression for an infill wall.
  • Additional information about alternative natural materials including rammed earth, cordwood masonry, and compressed earth blocks.
